Former President Muhammadu Buhari arrived in Maiduguri, Borno State, on Tuesday to express solidarity with the state government and residents affected by recent floods. His visit comes after severe flooding in the region that has displaced and affected thousands of residents. Garba Shehu, Buhari’s spokesperson, disclosed this in a statement on X.com.
The statement revealed that Buhari was away on vacation during the flooding but has now come to personally extend his condolences. He was warmly received by Governor Babagana Zulum, Senator Ali Ndume, and other top officials upon his arrival in Maiduguri. The former president’s visit is seen as a significant show of support for the state.
Reports from September indicated that the flood’s impact has been extensive, with nearly one million people affected. The disaster resulted in the displacement of over 414,000 residents and the loss of at least 30 lives, underscoring the urgency of ongoing recovery efforts.
Donations to aid the Borno State government in flood relief and recovery efforts have surpassed N17 billion, including contributions from the Federal Government. These funds aim to support displaced persons and repair infrastructure damaged by the flood.
Buhari is expected to meet with the Shehu of Borno and other local leaders to discuss the challenges facing flood victims and explore additional support measures for the affected communities.
