The Kaduna State Primary Healthcare Development Agency has recently reported a troubling development concerning the cholera situation within the state. Specifically, there has been one recorded death linked to cholera among a total of 86 suspected cases.
This critical information was disclosed by Hamza Ibrahim-Ikara, the Director of Public Health, during an informative interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday in Kaduna.
Ibrahim-Ikara provided context for this situation by highlighting the broader cholera outbreaks that have plagued various regions across Nigeria over the past five months, affecting approximately 30 states in total.
Remarkably, Kaduna had not recorded any cases of cholera until a recent shift occurred on August 15, when the first index case emerged.
“We have not recorded any case of cholera but unfortunately for us, on August 15, we received the new index case,” Ibrahim-Ikara explained.
The case in question involved a 16-year-old boy who resided in Likoro, located within the Kudan Local Government Area (LGA).
Tragically, the young boy succumbed to the illness before health officials were able to reach him at a healthcare facility.
In response to this unfortunate event, the state government promptly activated its rapid response team, which mobilized resources and personnel to address the emerging health crisis.
This team swung into action immediately on August 16, demonstrating the government’s commitment to managing and containing the outbreak.
Ibrahim-Ikara further detailed the situation by indicating that additional cases had been reported.
Specifically, the state has documented a total of 19 cases from three local governments: Kudan reported 2 cases, Sabon Gari had 9, and Kubau accounted for 7.
This influx of suspected cholera cases has raised significant concerns among health officials and the community at large.
Kaduna State is currently grappling with a total of 86 suspected cholera cases spread across nine local governments. Of these, 24 individuals have received medical treatment and have been discharged, reflecting both the challenges faced and the proactive measures undertaken by healthcare professionals.
The health authorities remain vigilant as they monitor the situation closely, striving to implement effective measures to prevent further transmission of the disease and protect the health and well-being of the community.
Continuous efforts will be made to ensure that resources are allocated efficiently and that public awareness campaigns are conducted to educate the population about cholera prevention and control.
