The PDP in River State has been thrown into a myriad of controversies following several issues revolving around control; however, in a recent event, a Port Harcourt division of the Rivers State High Court has barred the state executives of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) led by Aaron Chukwuemeka from parading themselves as Exco of the party.
Justice Stephen Jumbo, the presiding judge, made this decision in his ruling on an interlocutory injunction on Monday.
The case was filed by two Port Harcourt-based legal practitioners, Edwin Woko and Love Otuonye, and two others who are members of the PDP, against the party’s National chairman, state chairman, and nine others, praying the court to declare null and void the purported PDP local government and ward congresses conducted in the 319 wards and 23 LGAs by pro-Wike supporters on the 27th of July, 10th of August, and 31st of August last year.
The applicants argued that all of the congresses were held in violation of a July 16, 2024, order from the Rivers State High Court prohibiting the PDP, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), and their representatives and privies from holding congresses until the hearing and resolution of the original summons had been completed.
This decision follows a similar one last year that declared the state, local government, and ward executives of the All Progressive Congress (APC), which produced Tony Okocha, to be invalid.
According to some, this is a setback for FCT Minister Nyesom Wike in his ongoing political conflict with Governor Siminalayi Fubara in Rivers State.
