Governor Bassey Otu of Cross River State inaugurated the 18 newly elected local government chairmen and vice-chairmen on Monday, following their recent victory in the November 2 elections under the All Progressives Congress (APC) banner. The APC achieved a complete win, securing all 18 chairmanship and 196 councillorship seats across the state.
At the ceremony held at Dan Archibong Lodge in Calabar, Governor Otu emphasized the responsibility of local government leaders to prioritize grassroots development. He highlighted the importance of transparency, accountability, and a “People First” approach, urging the new leaders to focus on community development, infrastructure improvement, and enhanced public services.
“Your victory is a call to action to serve the people of Cross River and deliver on your promises with integrity,” Otu stated. He stressed that the role of local government leaders is not ceremonial but critical to advancing the state’s economic goals and improving residents’ quality of life.
Governor Otu reminded the leaders of their statutory responsibilities under the 1999 Constitution, describing local government councils as the closest tier of government to the people. “The core mandate of every local government council is the provision of basic amenities.
Your effectiveness in fulfilling this mandate will reflect the confidence that the electorate has placed in you,” he added.
In response, Hon. Udiandeye Peter, chairman of Obudu Local Government, expressed gratitude on behalf of the new officials. He pledged their commitment to grassroots development, aligning with Governor Otu’s vision for the state.
