“In the upcoming four to five weeks, Nigeria will not need to import gasoline at all,” Dangote declared at an event in Kigali.
Aliko Dangote, Africa’s wealthiest individual and Chairman of Dangote Group, confirmed that Nigeria will no longer have to depend on gasoline imports following the plans put in place by the Dangote Refinery.
Dangote highlighted that his refinery has the capability to cater to the petrol and diesel requirements of West Africa, as well as the aviation fuel needs of the entire continent.
Speaking at the Africa CEO Forum Annual Summit in Kigali, Dangote expressed confidence in the transformation of Africa’s energy sector.
He stated, “At present, besides gasoline, Nigeria has no need to import any other fuel, and within the next four to five weeks, specifically by June, there will be no gasoline imports needed.”
Dangote outlined the strides made by his company to ensure self-sufficiency in Africa’s energy sector.
“We are well-equipped to provide gasoline for West Africa, diesel for both West and Central Africa, and aviation fuel continent-wide. Additionally, our production of polypropylene, polyethylene, base oil, and other raw materials will meet the demands of Africa without the need for imports.”
Dangote shared his ambitious vision for making Africa independent in fertilizer production and reiterated the need for African nations to move away from being solely raw material exporters.
He further emphasized the importance of local production of finished goods to create employment opportunities and reduce dependency on imports.
Discussing the challenges faced during the refinery’s construction, Dangote mentioned encountering resistance from those benefiting from the existing trading practices. Despite doubts about the project’s success, he was determined to deliver on his vision.
Dangote pointed out policy inconsistencies as a hindrance for African entrepreneurs and called for leaders’ support to streamline trade across the continent.
