The Ebonyi State chapter of the Labour Party has officially designated Mr. Peter Obi, the party’s presidential candidate for the 2023 general elections, as its national leader.
Additionally, Fidelis Nwankwo has been appointed as the party leader in the state by party stakeholders.
This decision was included in a comprehensive six-point communique released following an extensive stakeholders meeting held in Abakaliki on Sunday.
The communique was endorsed by the leaders of both the Ebonyi South Senatorial Zone, Mr. Linus Okorie, and the Ebonyi North Senatorial Zone, Mr. Emmanuel Ezeh.
Furthermore, Mr. Emmanuel Nwobo, representing the Ebonyi Central Senatorial Zone, endorsed the communique on behalf of the National Transition Committee members and conveners of the stakeholder’s meeting.
During the meeting, members were urged to support the upcoming National Convention and state congress, which will be held to elect new party leaders.
The communique stated that Chief Fidelis Nwankwo, Okorie, and Ezeh, members of the NTC, organized the stakeholders meeting to inform party members in the state about future political activities, including recruitment of new members and registration, of the emerging Labour Party.
The stakeholders reflected on the post-election reviews conducted by the national and state working committees and resolved that Mr. Peter Obi should remain as the National Leader of the Party. They acknowledged Obi’s qualifications to revitalize the Nigerian economy from its current decline.
Stakeholders emphasized the importance of supporting the National Transition Committee in organizing an inclusive state congress and national convention for the Labour Party.
Moreover, stakeholders called on conflicting party members to put aside their differences for the greater good of the party and its mission to improve the lives of Nigerians.
They emphasized the commitment of a united Labour Party in the state to actively recruit and register new members at the appropriate time, setting a target of 400,000 members.
In a motion presented by Chief Jerry Obasi, the former Chairman of the All Progressives Grand Alliance and deputy governorship candidate of APGA in the 2015 general election in the state, Nwankwo was officially adopted as the party leader in the state. This motion was seconded by Mr. Sylvester Nwankwo, a former member of the House of Assembly in the state, with stakeholders unanimously supporting Nwankwo as the leader of the state party.
