Edo Election: PDP Demands Urgent Review of Edo Governorship Nomination Verdict

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has lodged an appeal against the Federal High Court ruling that invalidated its gubernatorial primary in Edo State. The appeal was submitted at the Court of Appeal, Abuja division, on Tuesday.
The party contested the judgment that deemed the primary election which resulted in Asue Ighodalo as its candidate, null and void. The appeal is grounded on 25 points, contending that the lower court’s decision went against the preponderance of evidence. PDP argued that it conducted a legitimate three-man ad-hoc ward congress on February 4, and the respondents were not involved.
PDP emphasized that its nominee was lawfully elected by the ad-hoc delegates who partook in the primary election. The Federal High Court had invalidated the primary election, citing that PDP had excluded 378 elected ward delegates from participating, thereby breaching its constitution and electoral guidelines. The court instructed the party to include the omitted delegates in the primary election.

PDP asserted that the trial court erred in granting the respondents’ requests and misconstrued their position. The party aims to annul the judgment and uphold its primary election that designated Asue Ighodalo as its gubernatorial candidate. The respondents in the appeal encompass Kelvin Mohammed, Gabriel Okoduwa, Ederaho Osagie, the Independent National Electoral Commission, and PDP officials.
The PDP’s appeal highlights the significance of adherence to internal party processes and the rule of law in the political landscape. It underscores the party’s commitment to upholding democratic principles and ensuring that the voices of all stakeholders are heard and respected. The legal battle over the gubernatorial nomination in Edo State reflects the complexities and challenges inherent in the electoral process, emphasizing the need for transparency, accountability, and fairness.

As the appeal progresses, it is essential for all parties involved to uphold the integrity of the legal system and respect the court’s decisions. The outcome of this case will not only impact the PDP but also set a precedent for future electoral disputes and party primaries. It serves as a reminder of the importance of due process, proper documentation, and adherence to party guidelines to avoid controversies and legal challenges in the future.
Ultimately, the resolution of this appeal will shape the political landscape in Edo State and influence the upcoming gubernatorial election. It is a test of the judiciary’s independence, the party’s internal mechanisms, and the commitment to democratic values. The PDP’s stance in defending its nominee underscores the party’s determination to ensure a fair and transparent electoral process, setting a precedent for electoral integrity and accountability.
