The Nigeria Police Force has arrested no fewer than nine suspects in the ongoing Edo State governorship election. Eight individuals were apprehended for alleged vote buying, while the ninth suspect posed as a fraudulent journalist, claiming affiliation with a prominent television station in the country.
In a statement issued on Saturday, the Force Spokesperson, Muyiwa Adejobi, revealed that two of the suspects, Emotingham Godspower and Farawei Isaac, are key members of the Peoples Democratic Party. Adejobi further stated that these two PDP members are connected to two influential figures identified as “Atiku” and “The Boss.”
The spokesperson elaborated that on September 20, 2024, at approximately 1900 hours, police operatives conducted coordinated raids on identified high-risk locations. This well-orchestrated effort led to the arrest of the two key suspects, Emotingham Godspower (25) and Farawei Isaac (27), both from the Ufunama community, Ovia South West LGA, Edo State.
The suspects, who are part of a larger network involving “Atiku” and the kingpin known as “The Boss,” were apprehended at the So Cash Guest House in Ekpoma, where a substantial amount of cash and incriminating items were recovered.
The items discovered included a list of voters’ names accompanied by corresponding monetary values, a collection of pre-filled ballot papers, and a set of fraudulent identity cards. Six additional suspects were arrested in possession of a substantial sum of money, weapons, and other items.
Adejobi stated that six suspects, namely Suleiman Abdurahim, Fatima Yakubu, Yusuf Aminat (52 years), Salihu Lukman (54 years), and Safianu Saratu (32 years), were all apprehended at Aibotse Secondary School, adjacent to Meremu Hotel in Auchi, for engaging in the practice of vote buying. This group was discovered with a large amount of money, a cache of weapons, and a detailed plan outlining strategies for voter intimidation.
Additionally, a fraudulent journalist, who claimed to be a staff member of one of Nigeria’s leading television stations, was also apprehended, further highlighting the extent of the criminal network.
