Edo Government Accuses APC of Sponsoring Arrests of PDP Leaders in the State

The Edo State Government has accused the All Progressives Congress (APC) of orchestrating the arrest of over ten Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) leaders, including Collins Aigbogun, the chairman of the Esan West local government council. These arrests are allegedly connected to accusations of political violence.

At a press conference in Benin, Chris Nehikhare, the state commissioner for Communication and Orientation, condemned the repeated arrests of PDP leaders and supporters, particularly in the run-up to the September 21, 2024, governorship election. Nehikhare urged security agencies to stop these actions, which he claims are aimed at intimidating the PDP.

Newman Ugiagbe, chairman of the Edo State chapter of the Association of Local Government of Nigeria (ALGON), also condemned the assault and arrest of Aigbogun. He called it a violation of democratic principles and the rule of law.

The controversy began when the Commissioner of Police in Edo State, CP Nemi Edwin-Iwo, confirmed the arrest of Aigbogun. The APC had previously reported Aigbogun to the Inspector General of Police, accusing him of being involved in political violence in Illeh community, Esan West Local Government Area.

CP Edwin-Iwo explained that Aigbogun was brought to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) in Benin by the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) after a police invitation. He confirmed that Aigbogun had reported himself to the police. The Commissioner said Aigbogun had been wanted for previous charges and was moved to Abuja for further investigation. He assured that if evidence is found against Aigbogun, he will be brought back to Benin.

In response, Chris Nehikhare criticized the APC, claiming that their actions were an attempt to influence the upcoming election. He argued that the repeated arrests of PDP members, who have been detained for months without charges, are a tactic to intimidate the opposition. Nehikhare demanded that the APC explain the whereabouts and legal status of the detained PDP members.

Newman Ugiagbe of ALGON urged security agencies, including the Attorney General, Commissioner of Police, and other authorities, to investigate and hold accountable those responsible for these attacks. He expressed concern that the APC is using violence and intimidation to suppress PDP members. Ugiagbe called for a free and fair electoral process and the immediate release of Collins Aigbogun.

Ugiagbe stressed that violence has no place in a democratic society and called on all stakeholders, including political parties and security agencies, to ensure the safety and rights of all citizens during the election. He demanded that justice be served and that Aigbogun be released promptly.
