Edo Governorship Tribunal: INEC’s Decision Not to Call Witnesses Raises Eyebrows
Share on FacebookShare on TwitterShare on WhatsappShare on EmailShare on Telegram

The Edo State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal was taken by surprise on Thursday when the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) announced that it would not be calling any witnesses to defend its case. The commission’s decision was revealed by its lawyer, Kanu Agabi (SAN), who informed the tribunal that INEC had decided to close its case without presenting any witnesses.

The development came as a shock to many, as INEC had previously indicated that it would be calling five witnesses to testify in its defense. The commission’s decision not to call witnesses has raised eyebrows, with many wondering what prompted the sudden change of heart.

According to reports, INEC’s lawyer, Agabi, informed the tribunal that the commission had given careful thought to the matter and had decided that it was not necessary to call any witnesses. The lawyer’s statement was met with surprise by the tribunal, which had expected INEC to present its case through witnesses.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and its candidate, Asue Ighodalo, had challenged the outcome of the September 21, 2024 governorship election in Edo State, alleging irregularities and malpractices. INEC’s decision not to call witnesses has been interpreted by some as a sign that the commission may not have a strong case to defend.

Lawyer to the PDP and Ighodalo, Adetunji Oyeyipo (SAN), expressed surprise at INEC’s decision, but stated that his clients were not opposed to the commission’s move. Oyeyipo noted that the decision was within INEC’s rights and that his clients would proceed to present their case.

The tribunal has adjourned till Monday for the respondents to open their case. Lawyers to Governor Monday Okpebholo and his party, the All Progressives Congress (APC), have indicated that they are ready to present their case.
