The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has pledged that the police will ensure a fair and unbiased environment for all political parties in the forthcoming governorship election in Edo State, scheduled for September 21. This promise comes as part of efforts to maintain peace and order during the election period.

Egbetokun made this assurance on Thursday in Benin during a formal ceremony where political parties and their candidates signed a peace accord. The accord is part of a broader initiative led by the National Peace Committee, chaired by Abubakar Abdulsalami, a former military head of state.

The committee’s aim is to foster a peaceful and orderly election process.
However, it is worth noting that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and its governorship candidate opted not to sign the peace accord.

On the other hand, key figures such as Monday Okpebholo of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Olumide Akpata of the Labour Party (LP), and representatives from several other political groups did endorse the agreement. The peace accord is designed to prevent violence and ensure that all parties have a fair chance in the election.

During the ceremony, Egbetokun emphasized the police’s commitment to neutrality and professionalism. He reassured the public and all stakeholders that the police would uphold these principles while working to create a safe and impartial environment for the election.

“I’m here today to reaffirm our commitment to a peaceful and secure electoral process,” Egbetokun stated. “We recognize the importance of this moment and the significant trust placed in us to protect the integrity of this election. Our goal is to remain impartial, professional, and vigilant throughout the election period.”

The Inspector-General of Police underscored the importance of cooperation among all involved parties. He urged political parties, their candidates, and supporters to embrace peace, tolerance, and mutual respect. According to Egbetokun, such collaboration is crucial in creating an environment where voters can exercise their rights without fear or intimidation.

The police chief’s statements come amid a backdrop of heightened political tension and the potential for conflict. His assurance aims to reassure voters and political participants alike that the election will be conducted in a fair and orderly manner. By maintaining a neutral stance, the police hope to mitigate any potential issues and ensure that the democratic process is upheld.

Egbetokun’s pledge is a vital component of the broader efforts to ensure a smooth and credible election. As the election date approaches, the focus will remain on maintaining peace and ensuring that every voter can participate in the electoral process confidently and without fear. The collective efforts of the police and other stakeholders will be crucial in achieving a free, fair, and peaceful election in Edo State.
