Ahead of the gubernatorial election scheduled for Saturday, Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki has made a significant statement regarding the electoral process.
He declared that his party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), is committed to accepting the results of a properly conducted election. This assurance aims to promote confidence in the democratic process as the state prepares for an important decision.
In a post shared on his official X account, Governor Obaseki provided updates from his meeting with the Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Gwabin Musa. During this meeting, he stressed the importance of a free and fair electoral environment.
He expressed his main demand: that the people of Edo should be allowed to vote without any interference, ensuring that they can choose their preferred candidates.
Obaseki stated, “We are not asking for any special treatment; we just want Edo citizens to freely choose their candidates. We will accept the results of a fair election.”
This message underscores the PDP’s commitment to the democratic process and highlights the governor’s confidence in the integrity of the upcoming election.
The governor also acknowledged the crucial role that security forces have played in maintaining peace in Edo State over the past eight years. He noted that the collaboration between his administration and the security agencies has led to significant improvements in the state’s security landscape. “For eight years, the security forces in the state have been highly cooperative in helping us address security concerns,” he stated.
Obaseki elaborated on the initiatives that have been implemented to enhance security, mentioning the establishment of Forward Operating Bases. These bases, along with a digitized security architecture, have been instrumental in making Edo one of the safest states in Nigeria. This progress is particularly important in the context of elections, where security is often a major concern for voters.
By ensuring a safe environment, the governor aims to encourage greater voter participation in the electoral process. He believes that when citizens feel secure, they are more likely to exercise their right to vote. This is vital for the health of democracy in the state, as active participation from the electorate is essential for a legitimate government.
As the election approaches, Governor Obaseki’s commitment to a fair process reflects his desire for a transparent and accountable government. He encourages all Edo citizens to engage in the electoral process actively and to ensure their voices are heard.
