EDO STATE GOV-ELECT SEN. MONDAY OKPEBHOLO CALLS FOR GOV. OBASEKI ‘S PROBE

Monday Okpebholo, the Governor-Elect of Edo State, has raised an alarm of widespread looting of government funds and properties by officials of the outgoing administration led by Governor Godwin Obaseki. This alleged unwanton looting has prompted Okpebholo to call on the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Department of State Services (DSS) to without any delay carry out investigations into the affairs of the outgoing Governor and his cronies.

Monday Okpebholo has in a statement issued through his Special Assistant on Media, Godswill Inegbealso, Okpebholo expressed his dismay at the reported incidents of misappropriation and theft taking place in the Edo State Government House. Godwill Okpebholo stated: “With great shock, we regret the widespread reports of looting of government funds and properties by officials of the outgoing administration from the Government House, Benin City,” the statement declared. This assertion underscores the gravity of the situation as the state prepares for a leadership transition.

The governor-elect went on to express deep concern about the outgoing administration’s financial activities, particularly in the weeks leading up to the official handover date of November 12. He highlighted that, shockingly, the current government is still allegedly securing loans from various banks and financial institutions under dubious pretenses. This raises significant questions about the integrity and ethical conduct of the outgoing government.
Okpebholo’s in his statement highlighted a range of stolen and vandalized assets, painting a picture of systematic dismantling of state property. He lamented the massive looting of crucial items, including vehicles, office furniture, electronic gadgets, household utensils, and even carpets, from various governmental offices and residences.

“This unacceptable behaviour undermines the trust and faith of our citizens in those entrusted to serve them over the past seven years,” he stated, emphasizing the detrimental impact of such actions on public confidence in governance.
In light of these serious allegations, Okpebholo has called upon relevant authorities, including the EFCC, the police, and the DSS, to conduct a thorough and transparent investigation into the alleged misconduct. He urged these agencies to ensure that anyone found guilty of wrongdoing is held accountable, reflecting a commitment to uphold the rule of law and protect public resources.

Furthermore, the governor-elect issued a stern warning to financial institutions regarding their dealings with the outgoing administration. He cautioned banks and other lenders to refrain from engaging in transactions that could jeopardize the state’s financial stability, particularly concerning the granting of loans during this critical transition period. This request illustrates his intent to safeguard the state’s fiscal health and maintain ethical standards in financial dealings.

As the transition date approaches, Okpebholo has reiterated his firm stance against corruption, outlining his administration’s commitment to implementing a zero-tolerance policy for any acts of impunity or theft. “We will continue to monitor the situation until the last day of the outgoing administration,” he assured the public, signaling that vigilance will be paramount as he prepares to assume office.

The recent revelations of alleged looting and financial mismanagement by the outgoing Edo State government have raised serious concerns among citizens and stakeholders alike. With Okpebholo’s commitment to transparency and accountability, the upcoming administration promises to tackle these issues head-on. As investigations unfold, the people of Edo State will be watching closely, hoping for justice and a renewed sense of trust in their government. The outcome of this situation may well set the tone for Okpebholo’s tenure as he seeks to restore faith in public service and governance in the state.
