Arsenal’s sporting director, Edu Gaspar, is reportedly set to depart the club amid interest from Evangelos Marinakis’ group of clubs, which includes Nottingham Forest, Olympiacos, and Rio Ave. Multiple sources on Monday revealed that the Brazilian director is expected to join Marinakis’ expanding multi-club network, potentially taking a new role with further European expansion in view.
Since joining Arsenal in 2019, Edu has been instrumental in transforming the club’s transfer strategy and identity, overseeing notable signings such as Martin Odegaard and Declan Rice, and facilitating the exits of players like Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Mesut Ozil. His tenure has seen Arsenal invest over £867 million, with the club achieving an FA Cup victory and two runner-up finishes in the Premier League.
Edu’s departure comes as a self-initiated move, with reports suggesting recent shifts in senior responsibilities at Arsenal may have contributed to his decision. Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta is expected to address Edu’s situation during Tuesday’s pre-match press conference ahead of their Champions League clash with AC Milan.
Edu, a former member of Arsenal’s 2003/04 Invincibles, returned to the club from his role with the Brazilian Football Confederation, where he won the Copa America.
In 2022, he became Arsenal’s first-ever sporting director, emphasizing that “winning with style” was central to his vision for the club. His departure marks a significant change in Arsenal’s management structure, with the club now tasked with finding a successor to continue his legacy.
Fabrizio Romano also confirmed the news on his X page, stating that Marinakis has long viewed Edu as a top target to coordinate its group of clubs. Further updates on Edu’s exit are expected soon.
