The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has raised concerns about the evolving activities of internet fraudsters, popularly known as Yahoo Yahoo boys. According to EFCC Chairman Ola Olukoyede, these individuals have expanded their operations beyond online scams to more heinous crimes, including kidnapping, ritual killings, and arms trafficking.
Olukoyede revealed that the country suffered significant financial losses due to internet fraud, with over $500 million lost in just one year. He emphasized the severity of the crime, stating that it is no longer just about scamming people but has escalated to more violent and destructive activities.
The EFCC chairman defended the commission’s crackdown on internet fraudsters, citing the need to protect the country from the devastating consequences of their actions. He noted that the commission received over 11,000 petitions, investigated nearly 9,000 cases, and prosecuted around 5,000 cases in the past year alone.
Olukoyede also highlighted the EFCC’s commitment to internal cleansing, revealing that 27 staff members were sacked over corruption allegations in the past year. He emphasized the importance of integrity in the fight against corruption, stating that the commission must lead by example.
The EFCC chairman urged the media to play a more active role in shaping public perception of the commission’s work. He advocated for investigative journalism that highlights both corruption and the agency’s achievements, emphasizing the need for collaboration between the media and law enforcement.
Olukoyede’s comments were echoed by the Chief of Staff to the EFCC Chairman, Michael Nzekwe, who praised the media’s role in sensitization and advocacy. He called for greater collaboration, emphasizing that the fight against corruption is for the good of all Nigerians.
