Eguavoen Affirms Super Eagles’ Ability to Defeat Any Opponent
Share on FacebookShare on TwitterShare on WhatsappShare on EmailShare on Telegram

Interim coach Augustine Eguavoen is confident that the Super Eagles, with their current roster of talented players, have the ability to defeat any team they face. His optimism comes after a convincing 3-0 victory over the Cheetahs of Benin Republic in a recent Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier held at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo.

Following the match, Eguavoen expressed his belief in the team’s potential. “We have a squad full of quality players who can overcome any opponent,” he said. “Although we have great respect for all our rivals, the talent within this team gives us confidence that we can win against any side.”

Eguavoen emphasized that the success of the team is not just about having talented players but also about having the right mindset and strategy. “Football is not just about the players; it’s also about how we approach the game and how we perceive our opponents,” he explained. “It’s crucial to gather information about our opponents, develop a strategy, and then execute it effectively on the pitch.”

He credited the team’s recent success to the tactical formation used by the coaching staff. “The formation we used was carefully considered and discussed by the technical crew,” Eguavoen noted. “I’ve given it a lot of thought, and I’m confident that with the calibre of players we have, we can adapt to different formations as needed.”

Eguavoen also touched on the nature of football, describing it as a game of outcomes—wins, losses, or draws. “I don’t see any result as inherently poor. What matters is the belief we have in ourselves and our goals,” he said. “We have a clear vision of where we want to go, and our psychological readiness as a group plays a significant role in achieving our objectives.”

In his analysis of the match, Eguavoen praised the defensive performance of the team, describing it as superb. He also explained that asking six players to warm up during the second half was a strategic move to manage time effectively and not an indication that changes were urgently needed.

Eguavoen acknowledged the quality of the Cheetahs of Benin Republic, stating that they were a well-prepared team with a solid game plan. Despite their good performance, the Super Eagles managed to secure a convincing win.

Reports have it that Eguavoen was appointed as interim coach following the breakdown of the deal between the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) and Bruno Labbadia.

Eguavoen’s appointment comes with high expectations, and his confidence in the team’s ability to adapt and succeed is a positive sign for the future of the Super Eagles.
