Eguavoen on Osimhen’s Absence: We Have Other Players Ready to Step Up
Share on FacebookShare on TwitterShare on WhatsappShare on EmailShare on Telegram

Nigeria’s interim manager, Augustine Eguavoen, remains unfazed by the absence of Galatasaray striker Victor Osimhen as the Super Eagles prepare for their crucial 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying matches against Libya’s Mediterranean Knights.

While acknowledging that Osimhen’s presence would certainly be a boost for the team, Eguavoen emphasizes his confidence in the other strikers within the squad who are capable of stepping up to the challenge.

Eguavoen, a seasoned figure in Nigerian football and a 1994 Africa Cup of Nations champion, recognizes the impact Osimhen has on the team’s dynamics.

However, he is determined to focus on the resources at his disposal. In light of Osimhen’s absence, he has called up three capable center forwards for the double-header against Libya: Victor Boniface from Bayer Leverkusen, Kelechi Iheanacho from Sevilla, and Taiwo Awoniyi from Nottingham Forest.

With Osimhen sidelined, it is widely anticipated that Victor Boniface will take the lead in the attacking front.

Boniface is expected to be supported on the wings by either Ademola Lookman or Moses Simon, with Samuel Chukwueze also a potential option for the starting lineup.

This strategic formation aims to leverage the strengths of the available players and maintain a potent offensive presence.

Interestingly, while Iheanacho and Awoniyi are seasoned forwards, both have struggled to find the back of the net in the current season, having combined for no goals in their first ten appearances.

In contrast, Victor Boniface has been in impressive form, netting six goals in his first nine matches for Bayer Leverkusen. His recent performances make him a crucial asset for the Super Eagles as they head into this vital qualification phase.

In the international matches held in September, Boniface was preferred over Osimhen in the starting lineup due to Osimhen’s lack of match fitness at the time.

This decision reflects Eguavoen’s commitment to fielding players who are in top form and ready to contribute effectively to the team’s success.

Addressing the situation, Eguavoen spoke candidly during an interview, he stated “It’s a collective effort, it’s a team sport, not an individual sport. We are in touch; he’s a huge miss, we all know how important and impactful Osimhen can be, but we have other players who can step into his shoes.”

This sentiment highlights Eguavoen’s belief in teamwork and collaboration, essential elements for achieving success on the international stage.

He further emphasized, “He’s not here physically, but I am one hundred percent sure he’s here spiritually with us.”

This statement underscores the unity within the squad and the collective spirit that they aim to maintain, even in the face of challenges.

Of the twenty-three players selected for the Super Eagles squad for the AFCON qualifying matches against Libya, Kelechi Iheanacho stands out as the player with the most international goals, having scored fifteen times in fifty-five appearances.

His experience and scoring prowess will be vital as the team seeks to navigate these important fixtures.

As Nigeria prepares for its matches against Libya, Eguavoen’s leadership will be tested. The Super Eagles will strive to capitalize on the strengths of their squad and compensate for Osimhen’s absence, aiming to secure vital points in their quest for AFCON qualification.

With a blend of talent and determination, the Super Eagles are poised to face the Mediterranean Knights head-on, showcasing their commitment to achieving success on the continental stage.
