Former Kaduna governor, Nasir El-Rufai, says he will register a new political party as backup for ADC.
El-Rufai explained the new party initiative aims to protect against internal sabotage from All Progressives Congress (APC).
According to him, the APC may infiltrate the African Democratic Congress (ADC) through planted loyalists or aggrieved former members.
He said registering a new party plan ensures continuity and control if sabotage threatens opposition unity efforts.
El-Rufai, now aligned with the Social Democratic Party (SDP), spoke while discussing the future of Nigeria’s growing opposition coalition.
He warned that many who refused to rejoin the APC have become targets of official harassment and political persecution.
Government agencies like EFCC, ICPC, and CCB allegedly intimidate opposition members unwilling to support the APC administration.
“The new party strategy serves as a safeguard in case ADC leadership faces engineered crises or breakdowns,” he said.
He emphasized that the ADC coalition is a temporary alliance, subject to change depending on internal and external pressures.
“If we see the ADC slipping into government control, we will activate the second option immediately without hesitation,” he added.
Observers note the move underscores widespread distrust between opposition leaders and the ruling party heading into the 2027 elections.
Political analysts also believe a second-party registration reflects long-term planning and strategic caution within the opposition’s growing framework.
The opposition coalition aims to build a credible alternative platform capable of defeating the APC in the next general elections.
