The Concerned Citizens of Ogugu community in Awgu Local Government Area of Enugu State have expressed disapproval towards a media report questioning the legitimacy of the community’s election that resulted in the selection of Chief Aloysius Chidozie Ogbonna, Jnr, as their Igwe-elect.
It is noted that Ogbonna was chosen as the new leader of the community in an election where he garnered 867 votes, while his rival, Chief Egbo Godwin, received 363 votes.
Nevertheless, an unidentified group released a press statement disavowing the election after five months. In response, the concerned citizens, through a statement signed by their national coordinator and secretary, Chief Egbo Silas and Sebastine Okolie, respectively, urged the media to avoid being manipulated into spreading falsehoods about their community.
They highlighted the openness, fairness, and trustworthiness of the recent election process in Ogugu. Additionally, they praised the integrity and righteousness of Chief Aloysius Chidozie Ogbonna Jnr, the newly appointed Igwe, emphasizing that his appointment was based on merit and compliance with the constitutional regulations governing the Igwe institution in Ogugu.
The Concerned Citizens also emphasized Chief Ogbonna’s leadership qualities, commending his steadfast commitment to the community’s welfare, dedication to upholding traditional values, and vision for a prosperous and united Ogugu.
Regarding the election outcome, the group disclosed that Chief Ogbonna triumphed with 867 votes, while his opponent, Chief Egbo Godwin, received 363 votes.
“This overwhelming community support,” they argued, “validates Chief Ogbonna’s extensive popularity and endorsement.”
