The Enugu State Government has declared malaria treatment free in all state hospitals. This initiative is part of the State Malaria Elimination Programme, supported by the Islamic Development Bank Lives and Livelihood Fund project.
The Commissioner for Health, Prof Ikechukwu Obi, announced the directive during the official flag-off of the programme at the Uwani General Hospital in Enugu South Local Government Area.
Obi emphasized that the government has established a whistleblower policy to ensure that malaria treatment remains free.Residents are encouraged to report any healthcare facility charging for anti-malaria drugs and testing within the next two years.

This initiative is crucial, given that Enugu State has one of the highest malaria burdens in Nigeria, with a prevalence rate of 24%.According to the National Coordinator of NMEP/National Programme Manager, IMPACT, Dr Nnenna Ogbulafor, the last time Enugu State received support for its malaria programme was in 2014-2015.
Ogbulafor encouraged residents to take advantage of the current support programme to reduce the malaria burden.The free malaria treatment initiative is a significant step towards achieving the State Malaria Elimination Programme’s goals.
