The European Union has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting democratic governance in Nigeria by launching an internship programme for young Nigerians. The programme, which is part of the EU’s Support to Democratic Governance in Nigeria Programme, aims to provide young individuals with hands-on experience in constituency offices and legislature-constituent relations.
According to the EU, the programme is designed to encourage youth participation in the democratic process and provide them with the skills and knowledge needed to become effective leaders. The programme is being implemented in partnership with Yiaga Africa, a non-profit organisation that works to promote democratic governance and civic engagement in Nigeria.
Speaking on the programme, Zissimos Vergos, Deputy Head of the EU Delegation to Nigeria and ECOWAS, said that the EU believes that a thriving democracy relies on responsible leadership and active citizen engagement. “Young people play a significant role in developing Nigeria’s democracy, and we are committed to supporting them in this endeavour,” he said.
The internship programme, which started in December 2024, has already shown a positive impact. Olaiya Oluwadamilola, one of the interns, praised the programme for enhancing her communication skills and boosting her confidence. “This internship has not only given me hands-on experience in constituency offices, but it has also inspired me to pursue a career in politics,” she said.
Another intern, Salihu Gode, commended the EU’s support for inclusive governance and mentorship. “The skills and knowledge I’ve acquired through this programme have given me the confidence to drive meaningful change in my community and contribute to Nigeria’s democratic growth,” she said.
The EU’s support for young Nigerians in politics is part of its broader efforts to promote democratic governance and civic engagement in Nigeria. The organisation has been working with various stakeholders, including civil society organisations and government agencies, to promote democratic values and principles.
