Harry Kane insisted England will find the right formula for Euro 2024 success, despite a lackluster performance in Thursday’s 1-1 draw with Denmark. Gareth Southgate’s men would have booked their place in the round of 16 as Group C winners had they beaten the Danes in Frankfurt.
England captain Kane got off to a perfect start with a superb close-range finish from Kyle Walker’s deflected cross in the 18th minute, but England then lost steam and Denmark equalized after 34 minutes when Morten Hjulmand fired a brilliant 25-yard shot past Jordan Pickford.
It was not a performance to inspire fear in England’s rivals, as their incoherent play came after a comfortable 1-0 win over Serbia in last weekend’s group opener. But Bayern striker Kane is very confident that England will be at full speed in the end.
“I think I said before the tournament that there were no easy games and I think that’s showing,” he said. “You can reach a certain level with or without the ball and you can get better.
“You can see that a good team is when you can get results even when you’re not playing at your best, like in the last two games.” England will still be in the running to qualify for the last 16.
They topped the group with four points in their final game against Slovenia, but they want to win their group and that will probably make it easier to draw in the round of 16.
Former England players such as Alan Shearer and Rio Ferdinand have been harshly critical of the Three Lions’ recent poor performance in Germany.
Kane acknowledges there will be doubts after the performance but expects England to weather the storm.
“We’re at the top of the group, we know we can improve and I think there will probably be a lot of noise at home and a bit of disappointment. We saw it in the last European Championships when we drew with Scotland. We’ll take it step by step.” Kane said.
