President Bola Tinubu has voiced serious concern over the devastating flooding in Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State. The president has directed the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to provide immediate assistance to those affected by the flooding.
According to a statement from his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu has described the current flooding as the worst in recent decades.
In his statement, President Tinubu extended his heartfelt condolences to the government and people of Borno State. The president emphasized the urgency of the situation, calling for the immediate evacuation of people from the most affected areas.
He reassured Governor Babagana Umara Zulum that the Federal Government is ready to collaborate on addressing the immediate humanitarian needs of the displaced population. Onanuga highlighted that President Tinubu is committed to mobilizing federal resources to support the state through this crisis.
Barkindo Mohammed, Director-General of the Borno State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), has described the situation in Maiduguri as “terrible.” The collapse of the Alau Dam early Tuesday morning has led to severe flooding across the city.
The floodwaters have inundated various parts of Maiduguri, leaving many residents in desperate need of assistance. Mohammed reported that SEMA has initiated rescue operations and started distributing sandbags to affected areas. However, the situation remains challenging. During a rescue mission in Gozari, Mohammed and his team were trapped by the rising floodwaters, adding to the difficulties faced by emergency responders.
The flood has left hundreds of people stranded on the streets with nowhere to go. Many are seen sheltering under trees or in makeshift areas with their families. Musa Abbas, who is with a group including two women and six children, expressed his frustration and helplessness.
His family is unable to reach their relatives in Bulumkutu due to a submerged bridge, leaving them stranded in the flood-affected area. “We have no option but to stay here and hope the rain stops,” Abbas said, highlighting the dire conditions faced by many residents.
As the situation continues to unfold, President Tinubu’s administration and local authorities are working to coordinate relief efforts and ensure that those affected receive the necessary aid and support. The federal and state governments are focused on addressing the immediate needs of the displaced population and mitigating the impact of the floods on Maiduguri and its residents.
