Federal High Court Reinstate Philip Shaibu as Edo Deputy Governor

The Federal High Court in Abuja has issued a significant ruling, reinstating Philip Shuaibu as the Deputy Governor of Edo State. This decision comes in the aftermath of a turbulent period marked by his impeachment by the Edo State House of Assembly in April.
The court’s directive not only reinstates Shaibu to his former role but also mandates the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to promptly restore his security detail. This reinstatement follows a prolonged dispute between Shaibu and Governor Godwin Obaseki, culminating in Shaibu’s removal from office. Shaibu’s impeachment was initiated subsequent to the adoption of a report by a seven-member committee, appointed by Edo State Chief Judge Justice Daniel Okungbowa. The committee was tasked with investigating allegations of misconduct leveled against the deputy governor.

During a plenary session of the Edo State House of Assembly, eighteen out of nineteen members present voted in favor of Shaibu’s impeachment, with one member abstaining from the voting process. This decision underscored the contentious nature of the allegations and the subsequent proceedings that led to Shaibu’s removal from office.

In response to the court’s ruling, Shaibu expressed gratitude for the restoration of his position and emphasized his commitment to serving the people of Edo State diligently. He affirmed his readiness to resume his responsibilities, aiming to contribute positively to the state’s governance and development agenda.
Governor Godwin Obaseki’s administration has faced challenges in maintaining stability amidst political tensions, including disagreements between key officials within the state government. The reinstatement of Shaibu by the Federal High Court represents a pivotal development in Edo State’s political landscape, highlighting judicial oversight and the adherence to constitutional processes in resolving governance disputes.
Shaibu’s legal team, led by prominent advocates, argued forcefully in court, presenting evidence and legal precedents that supported his case for reinstatement.

The court’s decision, therefore, serves not only as a restoration of Shaibu’s political standing but also reaffirms the principles of justice and due process in the governance of Edo State.
Looking forward, stakeholders anticipate that Shaibu’s reinstatement will usher in a period of stability and renewed focus on governance priorities in Edo State. His return to office is expected to reinvigorate efforts aimed at addressing critical issues facing the state, including infrastructure development, healthcare, and education.
The reinstatement of Philip Shuaibu as Deputy Governor of Edo State by the Federal High Court represents a pivotal moment in the state’s political history. It underscores the judiciary’s role in upholding democratic principles and ensuring accountability within the governance framework. As Shaibu prepares to resume his duties, all eyes are on Edo State, anticipating how this development will shape its political trajectory and governance priorities in the months ahead.
