The Federal Government has earmarked N3.3 billion to mitigate the impact of recent flooding on the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital (UMTH) in Borno State. The funding will address damages to the hospital’s cancer center, Radiology department, and oxygen plant, which were severely affected.
This allocation is part of the 2025 budget presented by President Bola Tinubu to the National Assembly, titled “Budget of Restoration: Securing Peace, Rebuilding Prosperity.” The intervention aims to rebuild critical healthcare infrastructure and support disaster resilience in the region.
The flood, caused by the breach of the Alau Dam in September, displaced over 400,000 people and claimed more than 30 lives across nine local government areas. The UMTH was one of the worst-hit institutions, prompting the government to establish a technical committee to reassess dam safety nationwide.
Additionally, a Disaster Relief Fund was launched to enhance the country’s ability to respond to and prevent natural disasters, with a particular focus on addressing recurrent floods.
