The Federal Government of Nigeria has reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring lasting peace and stability across the country. This assurance was given by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, during a meeting with the leadership of the Fellowship of Churches of Christ in Nigeria (TEKAN) in Abuja.
Senator Akume emphasized the importance of peace in governance, stating that it is essential for effective governance. He noted that the current administration is resolute in revamping and reinforcing the security architecture of the Armed Forces to address existing security challenges.
The SGF acknowledged the contributions of former President Muhammadu Buhari but highlighted that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration has identified and tackled critical security gaps. He cited the reclamation of local government areas previously occupied by Boko Haram insurgents as a testament to the administration’s proactive measures.
Senator Akume also commended the role of religious institutions in fostering national development, particularly in education, healthcare, and peacebuilding. He assured TEKAN of the government’s readiness to collaborate with religious organizations in promoting peaceful co-existence and national development.
The meeting with TEKAN was seen as an opportunity for the government to engage with key stakeholders and reassure them of its commitment to peace and security. The government has been facing growing concerns over insecurity, and this meeting was a step towards addressing those concerns.
TEKAN President Rev. Joel Stephen Billi expressed appreciation for President Tinubu’s efforts, including the signing of the bill establishing the North Central Development Commission (NCDC) into law. However, he urged the administration to intensify efforts to improve security and expand social welfare programs to mitigate economic hardship.
