The Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) has announced that it has brought over 170,000 taxpayers into its tax net since the current Chairman, Mr. Zack Adedeji, took over the helm of the organization.
FIRS Special Adviser to the Chairman on Tax Policy, Mr. Femi Olarinde, made the disclosure at a press conference organized by the agency in Lagos for the Nigerian Association of Commercial and Industrial Correspondents.
The team also included Mr. Dare Adekanbi (Special Adviser to the Chairman on Media), Mr. Sikiru Akinola (Media Technical Assistant), and Mr Dapo Awolowo (Director, Office of the Special Adviser to the Chairman on Media). Olarinde, during his presentation at the event, said FIRS has revolutionized its operations under the strategic tripod of people, technology, and process.
He said it has become the focal point for taxpayers in which their fears and needs concerning tax are meant. At the same time, cutting-edge technology and improved procedures will be used to save time and eliminate inconveniences previously faced by taxpayers.
“FIRS has integrated nine new modules into its tax management system called TaxProMax, automating over 80% of manual processes.
“It has also revolutionized the operations of the tax office, making it a streamlined ‘one-stop shop’ catering to various categories of taxpayers including high, medium, and small taxpayers.
“This has resulted in improved customer satisfaction and a significant reduction in customer complaints from the fourth quarter of 2023 to the first quarter of 2024.
“Since last September when the new Chairman took over, the FIRS has added over 170,000 new taxpayers to its tax net.”
Olarinde revealed that the FIRS has achieved 107 percent of its 2023 revenue target of N11.55 trillion through collections. He added that at N12.36 trillion, it has already achieved 81 percent of its first quarter of 2024 revenue, or N3.94 trillion, the highest ever for the quarter and 56 percent more than the first quarter of 2023.
