Former IPAC Chairman Urges Osun State to Support Local Government Autonomy

As Osun State marks its 33rd anniversary, Wale Adebayo, the former Chairman of the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC) in the state, has issued a call to end the excessive control over local governments by the state administration. In a recent statement, Adebayo emphasized the urgent need for local government autonomy to enable these local entities to serve their communities effectively and fulfill their constitutional roles.

Reflecting on the state’s journey under various administrations, Adebayo acknowledged both achievements and challenges but expressed deep concern about the ongoing issues related to local government autonomy.

He criticized the current state government for its undue influence over local legislative and judicial functions, which he believes undermines democratic principles and the separation of powers. According to Adebayo, this centralization of power is stifling the growth and development of Osun State.
Adebayo also highlighted the troubling disconnect between policymakers and the everyday lives of ordinary residents.

He pointed out that many officials, while making significant decisions affecting millions, have their families living abroad, creating a gap between their decisions and the real needs of the people they govern. This separation, Adebayo argues, has contributed to the ineffective functioning of local governments, which are unable to provide necessary services due to the state government’s control.

He urged the state government to lift its control over local governments, allowing them to operate independently as mandated by the Nigerian constitution. As the Chairman of the Allied Peoples Movement (APM) in Osun State, Adebayo called on citizens to hold their leaders accountable and demand that local governments be empowered to fulfill their duties.

In addition to advocating for local government autonomy, Adebayo stressed the importance of reviewing the state’s policies on education and agriculture. He criticized the high cost of food in Osun State, noting that it has been among the highest in the country, which has led to significant hardship for residents.

He urged Governor Ademola Adeleke to take immediate action to address this issue by focusing on supporting local farmers, enhancing agricultural infrastructure, and boosting food production.

Adebayo also emphasized the need for greater investment in education to equip citizens with skills that can drive economic development. He concluded by urging the state government to take these issues seriously, as addressing them is crucial for the future prosperity of Osun State.
