Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar has called on the Nigerian federal government to take decisive action against those promoting ethnic discrimination and violence. His remarks come in response to recent demands for the forced relocation of Igbo people from Lagos and other southwest states.
In a statement issued on Thursday, Abubakar strongly condemned these calls, characterizing them as deeply troubling and contrary to Nigeria’s core values of unity and coexistence. He emphasized that such rhetoric not only divides the nation but also jeopardizes its peace and security. Abubakar underscored that Nigeria’s Constitution guarantees every citizen the right to live and work freely anywhere in the country, regardless of their ethnic background.
Abubakar’s statement was a reaction to a recent online movement under the hashtag #IgboMustGo, which has called for the expulsion of Igbo people from Lagos and other parts of the southwest region. He described this movement as fundamentally opposed to the principles of national unity and inclusiveness. The former Vice-President warned that such divisive and inflammatory rhetoric poses significant risks to national harmony.
Drawing on historical examples, Abubakar cited the tragic events in Rwanda, where inflammatory language and ethnic hatred led to devastating consequences. He stressed the need for Nigeria to learn from such historical lessons and act promptly to prevent similar outcomes. Abubakar called for a strong and immediate response from the Nigerian government and relevant authorities to address the issue and prevent the spread of hate.
He urged the government to conduct thorough investigations into those inciting ethnic violence and discrimination. Abubakar stressed that it is crucial to arrest and prosecute individuals involved in promoting such dangerous agendas. Upholding the rule of law and ensuring that those who incite hatred face severe legal repercussions is essential to maintaining national security and unity.
According to Abubakar, Nigeria’s strength lies in its diverse population. Lagos and the southwest region have long been known for their cultural diversity, with people from various ethnic backgrounds contributing to the country’s development and growth. The Igbo community, like other ethnic groups, plays a vital role in this cultural mosaic.
He called on all Nigerians to unite against divisive rhetoric and to promote values of tolerance, understanding, and togetherness. Abubakar emphasized that the future of the country depends on the ability of its people to coexist peacefully and work together harmoniously.
Furthermore, Abubakar expressed alarm over the lack of response from authorities five days after the threat emerged. He stressed the urgency of taking immediate action to investigate, arrest, and prosecute those behind the call for forced relocations. Acting swiftly is crucial to preventing further escalation and deterring others from pursuing similar divisive agendas that threaten national security.
