After enduring a prolonged transfer saga considered one of the most intricate in football history, former Super Eagles captain Mikel Obi disclosed that he had received absolution from the renowned Sir Alex Ferguson, as reported by Empire Sports Extra.
In 2005, Mikel, a highly-regarded young talent at Norwegian club Lyn Oslo, caught the attention of Manchester United.
The Nigerian prodigy appeared to have been secured by the Red Devils from the Norwegian outfit, with an official announcement of the deal following suit.
Mikel was even captured in a Manchester United jersey, and a press conference was held. However, the transfer spectacularly fell apart after Chelsea intervened, and Mikel expressed feeling coerced into the move.
“I entered into a contractual agreement with Manchester United against my own volition,” Mikel disclosed to Sky Sports News in 2006. “I was subjected to immense pressure. I was deprived of counsel from my agent and trusted individuals, and I was not afforded ample time to deliberate on the matter.
“I succumbed to actions I did not desire due to the coercion exerted by Mr. Morgan Andersen (Lyn’s sporting director) and a United representative. I felt compelled and abandoned without any support, hence my compliance.
“I was deprived of the opportunity to reflect for a week and seek impartial guidance, making the pressure unbearable.”
Reports indicated that Ferguson was scheduled to travel to Norway for emergency discussions but had to abort the trip upon learning that the Nigerian had absconded from training in Norway, purportedly en route to London for negotiations with Chelsea.
Subsequently, Mikel donned the blue colors of Chelsea, enjoying an illustrious 11-year tenure at Stamford Bridge laden with numerous trophies.
In a later podcast, Mikel recounted his apprehension of encountering Ferguson on the touchline when Chelsea faced Manchester United. Upon their eventual encounter, the retired Scottish manager wore a disconcerting expression.
Nearly two decades later, the retired footballer reunited with Ferguson on the evening of the UEFA Champions League final between Real Madrid and Borussia Dortmund at Wembley, during which both parties shared a pleasant interaction.
On his Instagram post, Mikel shared a photo of himself alongside Ferguson with the caption, “He has pardoned me.”
Emerging from the 2005 Under-17 FIFA World Cup with Nigeria, Mikel emerged as one of the most promising young football talents globally.
During his tenure at Chelsea, Mikel clinched two Premier League titles, one UEFA Champions League trophy, one Europa League title, four FA Cup victories, two League Cup triumphs, and one Community Shield title.
