The Director-General of the Federal Road Safety Corps, Shehu Mohammed, has instructed sector commanders to ramp up enforcement of the installation of speed limit devices and raise awareness.
This directive was issued in a statement by the Corps Public Education Officer, Corps Commander Olusegun Ogungbemide, in Abuja.
The head of the FRSC expressed concern over the rising number of accidents involving cargoes, especially tankers transporting flammable substances on the highways.
Mr. Mohammed also mentioned a recent tragic road incident involving a Mazda sedan and a gas-carrying tanker that ignited and exploded.
He stated, “The collision led to the demise of two individuals and significant property damage on Obirikwerre Bridge, East-West road in Rivers State on Tuesday, June 4, at 08:00 am.”
Based on preliminary reports from the FRSC, the crash was attributed to speeding.
“The accident involved a total of five individuals, resulting in the loss of two lives, while the other three were rescued unharmed,” Mr. Mohammed recounted.
He emphasized that this measure is part of a proactive approach to reducing preventable road accidents.
He elaborated, “Sector commanders are required to ensure that these vehicle categories adhere to the regulations on the installation of speed limit devices, including safety valves (anti-spill), and other essential safety features.”
He clarified that this instruction aligns with the United Nations conventions ratified by the FRSC, particularly those related to the international transportation of hazardous materials by road.
Mr. Mohammed also extended his condolences to the families of the victims and prayed for them to find the strength to cope with their loss.
