The Plateau State Command of the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) has concluded a campaign to curb road accidents during the 2024 ember months, urging travellers to report reckless driving.
The initiative, themed “Speak Up Against Dangerous Driving: Crashes Kill More Passengers Than Drivers,” began on November 6, 2024, in Jos and included press briefings, town hall meetings, and public awareness activities like flier distribution and a motorcade carnival.
Maxwell Plateau, the Sector Commander of the FRSC in Plateau State, highlighted the importance of changing driver behavior and called on passengers to play an active role in promoting road safety. He emphasized that passengers have the right to a safe journey and should not hesitate to caution drivers who violate traffic rules.
“The transport sector’s role in moving people and goods safely is commendable. However, ensuring road safety is a shared responsibility. The FRSC is intensifying visibility and enforcement of traffic regulations during this period. Passengers must report reckless driving and follow safety guidelines to contribute to safer travels,” Plateau said.
Governor Caleb Mutfwang, represented by the Commissioner for Youths and Sports, Noel Nkup, lauded the FRSC’s efforts in reducing road crashes and clearing obstructions. He acknowledged the current road challenges and assured the public that measures are being taken to improve road conditions for safer travel.
Yakubu Dalyop, the state chairman of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), expressed the union’s commitment to supporting road safety initiatives. Dalyop announced that NURTW has implemented strategies such as setting up a task force to inspect vehicles for safety compliance.
