Luton Town required an astounding victory over Fulham by a margin of eleven goals, while also relying on Forest’s defeat to Burnley, who were already relegated, in order to have any chance of remaining in the Premier League. Unfortunately, their aspirations were shattered at Kenilworth Road.
Harry Wilson’s exceptional assist led to Adama Traore scoring his second goal of the season. However, a foul by Calvin Bassey on Chiedozie Ogbene enabled Carlton Morris to equalize for Luton from twelve yards out.
Raúl Jiménez reclaimed the lead for Fulham just before halftime, with Harry Wilson once again providing the assist. Jiménez added a third goal for Marco Silva’s team, but Alfie Doughty managed to score one for Luton, keeping their slim hopes alive.
The match was effectively decided in the 68th minute when the duo who had initially broken the deadlock combined once more. This time, Traore turned provider, allowing Harry Wilson to score his fourth goal of the season with a tap-in, aided by Iwobi’s crucial involvement in the goal build-up.
Over at Turf Moor, Chris Wood led the frontline with Taiwo Awoniyi on the bench. Wood scored twice within the first fifteen minutes to ease any anxiety. Josh Cullen pulled one back for Vincent Kompany’s side, but this did not alter their destiny, as their relegation had been confirmed two weeks prior. Taiwo Awoniyi replaced Wood in the 79th minute, while Ola Aina did not feature. Nevertheless, there will be jubilation in the Forest dressing room, as their status in the top-flight has been secured for another season.
Taiwo Awoniyi, Ola Aina, Calvin Bassey, and Alex Iwobi will now turn their attention to Nigeria’s pivotal World Cup qualifying matches against South Africa and the Benin Republic.
