Senate President Godswill Akpabio has denied allegations of sexual harassment made against him by Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan. Akpabio made the denial during plenary on Wednesday, stating that he has never harassed any woman, including Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan.
Godswill Akpabio emphasized that he was raised by a single mother who instilled in him the importance of respecting women. He also mentioned that he has four daughters and would never engage in any behavior that would compromise his values.
The Senate President urged Nigerians not to jump to conclusions based on mere allegations. He called on the public to await the court’s decision on the matter.
Meanwhile, the Senate rejected a petition laid by Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan, citing that it was sub-judice and breached the Standing Rules of the Senate. The petition was referred to the relevant committee for consideration, but senators kicked against it.

Senator Mohammed Tahir Monguno and Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele opposed the acceptance of the petition. Monguno argued that the petition was against the standing rules of the Senate, which prohibits consideration of matters already before a court of competent jurisdiction.
Bamidele also opposed the petition, stating that it was not necessary to accept it on emotional grounds. The Senate ultimately rejected the petition.
Akpabio’s denial and the Senate’s rejection of the petition have brought attention to the importance of due process and the rule of law. The matter is expected to be resolved in court.
