David ‘Davido’ Adeleke, the popular musician and Afrobeat start paid a surprising visit to President Bola Tinubu amid growing speculation of a possible defection of his uncle–the governor of Osun State, Ademola Adeleke, from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Viral videos and photos on social media showed the talented singer with some of his associates, Ubi Franklin, Pascal Chibuike Okechukwu, popularly known as Cubana Chief Priest, and others arrived at the Presidential Villa, where Mr Tinubu welcomed them.
Although the purpose of Davido’s visit to Mr Tinubu was not disclosed, the timing of the visit comes as reports of Governor Adeleke making desperate moves to leave the PDP for the APC continue to gain traction in the public following recent high-profile defections of opposition governors and party bigwigs to the ruling party ahead of the 2027 elections.
Earlier, Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, his predecessor Senator Ifeanyi Okowa who was Atiku Abubakar’s running mate in the 2023 presidential election, defected to the APC from PDP.
Just recently, Governor Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom also hinted he would be defecting to the APC in a very short time, directing his commissioners and other political appointees to join him in the move or resign from their positions.
Davido’s visit to President Tinubu has generated mixed reactions among citizens on social media with many condemning his choice to visit Mr Tinubu despite his statement in a recent interview in the United States urging African-Americans not to visit Nigeria, citing the president’s “bad” economic policies.
“Leave America and go where?” the singer queried. “It is not cool back home. The economy now is in shambles, the exchange rate is messed up, and the price of petroleum is too high.”
