Governor Abiodun Announces Charging Fee for New Electric Bikes in Ogun State

Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State has announced that his administration will introduce a N2,500 fee for charging the new electric bikes recently launched in the state. This initiative is part of Ogun State’s E-Mobility pilot program, which aims to modernize transportation and promote environmental sustainability.

Last week, Governor Abiodun unveiled 2,000 electric bikes and tricycles as part of this new program. The introduction of these electric vehicles is intended to offer a more eco-friendly alternative to traditional fuel-powered transportation. The governor highlighted that this move is not only about embracing technological advancements but also about addressing current environmental and economic challenges.

The governor detailed that three charging stations have been established in Abeokuta, the capital city of Ogun State. These stations are strategically located to serve the needs of electric bike users throughout the city. The charging points are situated near key locations: one close to the MKO Abiola International Stadium, another at Panseke, and the third at Oke-Sokori. These sites have been chosen to ensure convenience for users and to support the widespread adoption of electric bikes.

Governor Abiodun explained that users will be required to pay N2,500 for a full battery charge, which is expected to last for a day of regular use. He noted that this cost is relatively low compared to the expense of purchasing fuel for traditional motorbikes and vehicles. This pricing strategy is designed to make the transition to electric bikes more appealing and financially viable for the residents of Ogun State.

One significant feature of the charging stations is that they are connected to an Independent Power Plant (IPP). This connection is crucial as it ensures a stable and uninterrupted power supply, addressing common concerns about power outages that could affect the charging process. Governor Abiodun reassured the public that the issue of erratic power supply has been effectively managed to support the smooth operation of these charging stations.

The pilot program is initially being launched in Abeokuta, but there are plans to expand the initiative to other areas of Ogun State in the future. The governor expressed optimism that this expansion will further enhance the accessibility and benefits of the electric bike program across the state.

Governor Abiodun emphasized that the introduction of electric bikes is part of a broader strategy to reduce transportation costs and promote a cleaner environment. By lowering carbon emissions and offering an alternative to expensive fuel, the program reflects his administration’s commitment to mitigating the impact of fuel subsidy removal and rising fuel prices on the citizens.
