Governor Ahmed Aliyu of Sokoto State has expressed deep sorrow over the tragic deaths of civilians in military airstrikes on Christmas Day at Gidan Sama and Rumtuwa villages in Silame Local Government Area. The airstrikes, targeting Lakurawa terrorists, inadvertently claimed the lives of at least ten civilians and left many others injured.
In his statement, Governor Aliyu called the incident a heartbreaking tragedy and confirmed that he is in direct communication with the Nigerian Army to ensure a thorough investigation. “This heartbreaking event, caused by an accidental misfire, has claimed the lives of innocent citizens,” he said. He pledged that the state government would support the affected families and work with authorities to prevent future occurrences.
As part of his response, the governor visited the affected communities to assess the situation firsthand. He announced a donation of N20 million and 100 bags of assorted food items to the families of the deceased and injured. The funds will help alleviate the victims’ suffering and cover medical expenses for those hospitalized.
Governor Aliyu also urged Sokoto residents to remain calm and united in this difficult period. He extended his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and prayed for the swift recovery of the injured. He reassured the public of his administration’s commitment to maintaining peace and preventing further tragedies.
