Governor Hope Uzodimma of Imo State has decreed that civil servants in the state who are absent from work on Mondays shall not receive their wages.
The Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Declan Emelumba, conveyed the governor’s directive in a statement released on Tuesday.
A portion of the statement stated: “The Imo State Government has noted with great concern the absence of some civil servants from their duties, particularly on Mondays, without valid reasons.
“This behavior is deemed unacceptable, particularly since these civil servants fail to seek permission or approval from their superiors to be away from work, rendering their actions unlawful and unprofessional.
“As a result, any such misconduct will be perceived by the government as a direct affront to its authority, warranting penalties.
“Henceforth, Governor of Imo State, Sen Hope Uzodimma, has mandated that any civil servant who is absent from work on Mondays or any other day will forfeit their salary, in addition to facing other appropriate disciplinary measures.
“Consequently, permanent secretaries, heads of parastatals, and government agency heads are instructed to immediately implement daily attendance checks to ensure that those who defy this directive face repercussions.”
In the South-East region, Mondays are designated as days for staying at home. Despite efforts by authorities to discourage this practice, it persists.
