Group Discredits NLC President, Ajaero, Over Alleged Deceptive Leadership

The Democracy Watch Initiative, a well-known civil society organization, has harshly criticized Joe Ajaero, President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), accusing him of being one of the most deceptive labour leaders in Nigeria’s history.

The group argues that Ajaero’s recent criticism of the federal government’s policies is a mere show designed to give the false impression that he genuinely cares about the Nigerian people. In a statement released on Thursday, Dr. Tunji Bamidele, Director of Strategic Communication for the Initiative, claimed that Ajaero’s actions are an attempt to distract from his recent police interrogation related to alleged plots against the government.

Bamidele clarified that the police inquiry is not related to Ajaero’s role in the NLC but is based on credible intelligence regarding attempts to destabilize the government. He criticized Ajaero for his lack of support during the End-Bad-Governance protests, stating that Ajaero refused to participate and did not provide any substantial reason for his absence. Bamidele described Ajaero’s silence during the protests as a betrayal, emphasizing that his recent statements condemning government policies seem insincere.

“Ajaero’s sudden outrage over issues like the increase in fuel prices is a façade,” Bamidele said. “Where was this concern when Nigerians were suffering? His refusal to support the nationwide protests and his recent fake outrage are clear attempts to regain relevance after avoiding real action during critical times.”

Bamidele also mocked Ajaero’s attempt to connect his police investigation to his role in the NLC. He insisted that the police interest is related to serious allegations of attempts to undermine the government, not about Ajaero’s leadership of the NLC.

“Ajaero should not try to link his personal issues with the NLC,” Bamidele added. “His attempt to use the NLC as a shield against accountability is unacceptable. His history of deceit and lack of genuine commitment to the struggles of the Nigerian people is evident. Under his leadership, the NLC has become ineffective, making empty statements rather than leading meaningful change.”

The Democracy Watch Initiative called on Nigerians to see through Ajaero’s façade and recognize his recent actions as a desperate attempt to repair his damaged image. Bamidele emphasized that the fight for justice, equity, and good governance should be led by leaders who are consistent, courageous, and genuinely dedicated, not by those who abandon the cause when it becomes difficult.
