Manchester City manager, Pep Guardiola, has expressed concerns that his team’s chances of winning a fifth successive Premier League title could be dashed if they lose to Liverpool next week Sunday. Guardiola made this statement after Manchester City’s 4-0 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday.
The defeat marked Manchester City’s fifth loss in all competitions and third straight league game. Guardiola acknowledged that an 11-point gap between Manchester City and Liverpool would be too much to overhaul, even at this stage of the season.
“We’re not thinking about winning or losing [the title],” Guardiola said in an interview with ESPN. “We are not in the situation to think about what is going to happen at the end of the season.”
Guardiola emphasized that Manchester City’s focus should be on their next game against Liverpool, rather than worrying about the title. “If in the end we don’t win it’s because we don’t deserve it,” he said.
The Manchester City manager also reflected on his team’s past successes, saying, “We won it in the past because we deserved it.” However, he acknowledged that this season’s title race is far from over.
Liverpool currently sits at the top of the Premier League table and can extend their lead to eight points if they defeat Southampton on Sunday. Manchester City’s defeat to Tottenham Hotspur has put pressure on the team to perform against Liverpool next week.
The highly anticipated match between Manchester City and Liverpool will take place next week Sunday, with the title hopes of Guardiola’s team hanging in the balance.
