Oby Ezekwesili, a well-known public accountability advocate and former minister of education, has categorically refuted reports that she accepted bribes to assist Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan in her sexual harassment lawsuit against Senate President Godswill Akpabio.
In reaction to accusations made by UK-based activist Sandra Duru, sometimes known as Professor Mgbeke, Ezekwesili posted a sharply worded note on her verified X handle (previously Twitter). In addition to accusing Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan of fabricating the sexual harassment claims, Duru also claimed that Ezekwesili had received payment to support the claims.
Ezekwesili reaffirmed her lifelong dedication to justice and openness, dismissing the charges as unfounded and “laughable falsehoods”.
“No sensible and decent person who knows my incorruptible track record is deceived by the ridiculous fabrications being peddled by your traducers,” she wrote. “They know without a doubt that no amount of money, not even all the wealth in every Central Bank in the world, can buy my convictions, voice, and stance on any matter I choose to support.”
The former minister reiterated her support for Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan, who has demanded that her accusations against Akpabio be looked at thoroughly. Ezekwesili made it clear that her backing is based on principles rather than politics or self-interest.
“We simply despise injustice and the abuse of power. Period,” she declared. “You will continue to have my unwavering, sacrificial support in your resolute fight against a brigade of irresponsible politicians, led by the Senate President.”
In addition to criticising Nigeria’s political elite, claiming that sacrifice and public service are alien to many of them, Ezekwesili urged Nigerians to demand a fair and independent investigation into the accusations against Akpabio and warned that attempts to silence or discredit Akpoti-Uduaghan would fail.
“They cannot fathom the concept of service because money and their belly are their gods. In contrast, I, like many of you will continue, eternally, to live a purpose-driven life of sacrifice in the unrelenting fight for a decent and just Nigeria.”
The statement was made as the public’s interest in the developing dispute and the call for accountability in Nigeria’s highest legislature is growing.
Ezekwesili rounded up her message with a rallying up “So fight on, until justice is served!”
The Senate President is yet to publicly respond to the renewed calls for investigation.
