The presidential aspirant representing the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the upcoming 2023 election, Atiku Abubakar, has pledged to persist in his pursuit of the presidency for as long as he maintains good health. Atiku made this declaration during an interview on the Hausa service of the Voice of America in Abuja.
When questioned about his future candidacy, Atiku confidently asserted, “Undoubtedly, I shall persist in contesting for the presidency as long as I am alive and well. Just like the esteemed former US President Abraham Lincoln, who contested seven times before achieving victory.”
Recognizing the current state of the PDP, Atiku acknowledged that individual efforts alone would not suffice to secure victory. He stressed the necessity of strong support and collaboration with other political parties to enhance their chances of success in the upcoming election.
Atiku, who will be 81 years old at the time of the 2027 presidential election, has previously sought the presidency on six different occasions. He has appeared as a presidential candidate in three elections – 2007, 2019, and 2023.
Reflecting on past electoral experiences, Atiku drew inspiration from Abraham Lincoln’s journey to the presidency, emphasizing that setbacks should not deter one’s determination to achieve success.
Regarding the internal challenges within the PDP, Atiku emphasized the importance of unity within the party and the formation of strategic alliances with other political entities to secure victory in 2027.
Speculation has arisen about Atiku and other politicians’ intentions to establish a coalition with various political parties. Atiku recently met with Peter Obi, the presidential candidate from the Labour Party (LP), to discuss potential collaborations.
Addressing any concerns about potential discord between himself and Obi, Atiku reassured, “There will be no disagreements between us. We are fully committed to supporting the chosen representative in the upcoming elections.”
