IAEA Chief Raises Alarm Over Iran Nuclear Safety Risk Following U.S. and Israeli Airstrikes

IAEA chief Rafael Grossi has issued a stark warning about the growing Iran nuclear safety risk after recent airstrikes.
He told United Nations ambassadors that U.S. and Israeli strikes on Iran’s nuclear facilities have sharply degraded site safety.
Mr Grossi emphasized that the Iran nuclear safety risk has escalated dangerously, even though no radiation leaks were reported.
The U.S. had bombed fortified nuclear sites at Natanz, Fordow, and Esfahan during a coordinated strike last Saturday night.

According to Grossi, the Natanz enrichment facility suffered severe damage, including to underground uranium storage and key power systems.
He stated that chemical contamination inside the site now poses dangerous health risks if particles are inhaled or ingested.
The IAEA confirmed that although external radiation remains stable, the Iran nuclear safety risk cannot be ignored any longer.
Grossi listed further damage at nuclear-linked sites in Esfahan, Tehran, and Arak, raising concern about Iran’s wider nuclear infrastructure.

He warned that a continued military escalation could cause “unthinkable” consequences and total collapse of nuclear safety protocols.
The IAEA said Iran’s operational reactor in Bushehr could trigger a massive regional radiation disaster if ever directly attacked.
Grossi added, “The risk is real. Escalation delays diplomacy and endangers lives across the entire Middle East region.”
He urged global powers to reopen dialogue urgently before the situation spirals into a full-blown nuclear catastrophe.
The U.N. nuclear watchdog also noted that diplomatic solutions were quickly narrowing amid growing instability in the region.
Mr Grossi concluded by stressing that preserving nuclear safety should rise above political conflict and military retaliation at all times.
