An Ibadan Chief Magistrate Court has remanded Prophetess Naomi Silekunola, the former wife of the Ooni of Ife; Oriyomi Hamzat, the proprietor of Agidigbo FM; and Fasasi Abdulahi, the principal of Bashorun Islamic High School, in the Agodi Correctional Facility. The order comes as the court awaits legal advice from the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) of Oyo State.
The trio was arraigned on charges of conspiracy, negligence resulting in deaths, and failure to ensure proper security and medical support during a public event that led to the tragic Ibadan stampede. The incident, which claimed multiple lives, has ignited widespread calls for accountability and justice.
The court session saw heightened security as a crowd of supporters, particularly those backing Hamzat, gathered outside the premises. Tensions rose briefly when police vehicles conveying the defendants began leaving the courthouse, but authorities maintained order.
The Oyo State government, led by Governor Seyi Makinde, has promised a thorough investigation and accountability for the disaster. The governor has also called for calm and assured the public that steps will be taken to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
