Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has denounced the rising incidents of extortion involving police officers across the country. His remarks followed a recent case at the Zone 16 Zonal Headquarters in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, where four officers were implicated in extorting N10 million from a group of youths.
The accused officers, ASP Emmanuel Ubong, Inspector Nse Okon, Inspector Adiewere Collins, and Inspector Kuromare Marine have been detained and are currently undergoing an orderly room trial, as confirmed by Force Spokesperson Muyiwa Adejobi. The stolen sum has been successfully recovered, thanks to the intervention of the new Assistant Inspector-General of Police for Zone 16.
Adejobi emphasized that the Nigeria Police Force, under IGP Egbetokun’s leadership, upholds a strict zero-tolerance policy against corruption and misconduct. “The IGP has reaffirmed the commitment of the Force to thoroughly investigate all allegations of extortion and abuse of power,” he stated.
The Inspector General has directed that severe punishment be meted out to any officer found guilty of such violations, irrespective of their rank, to serve as a deterrent against future misconduct. Egbetokun also urged the public to utilize the provided Police helpline to report any cases of extortion or misconduct, highlighting the Force’s dedication to upholding its integrity and restoring public trust.
