The Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has launched a new app designed to provide a quick emergency reporting and response system for schools nationwide. The VGS—VIGISCOPE application was unveiled at the conclusion of a two-day seminar held from November 26 to 27, 2024, to inaugurate the Safe School Protection Squad.
According to the Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, Omolola Odutola, the app functions as a responsive alert system linked to a central base in Abuja. “It enhances technical intelligence in crime resolution and facilitates police access to difficult-to-reach areas, ensuring effective information sharing and threat detection,” Odutola explained.
The app allows students or school principals to connect to the central base via a smartphone to request immediate assistance or report incidents directly from the scene. “The App is internet-enabled, allowing schools in Ogun State to utilise it wherever internet access is available,” Odutola said.
Users can send a “rescue me” message, which activates the VGS central headquarters to coordinate a swift response. “It can identify distress, report emergencies, and facilitate coordinated responses,” Odutola added.
The app also aids technical intelligence by helping police officers access otherwise inaccessible areas without casualties. It supports the tactical interception of information and threat identification, ensuring effective crime resolution.
Odutola highlighted that the security app enables users to send distress messages to the tactical team’s commanders when in danger. “It is data-driven and accessible wherever internet service is available, allowing schools in Ogun State to benefit from its features,” she said.
The app is a significant step towards improving school safety in Nigeria. With its quick response feature, students and staff can feel safer knowing that help is just a click away.
The Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has demonstrated his commitment to leveraging technology to improve security in schools. The VGS—VIGISCOPE application is a testament to this commitment.
As the app is rolled out to schools in Ogun State, it is expected to make a significant impact on school safety. With its cutting-edge features and quick response capabilities, the VGS—VIGISCOPE application is set to revolutionize school safety in Nigeria.
