The Nigerian Correctional Service has debunked claims of a jailbreak at the Owerri Custodial Centre, calling the viral
reports “fake and unfounded.” The clarification came after a false narrative circulated online on Thursday, alleging an
armed invasion by suspected Fulani herdsmen.
Public Relations Officer for the Imo State Custodial Centre, CSC Goodluck Uboegbulam, issued a statement denying
any form of disturbance, stating the facility remains “cool and calm” with no security breach or escape of inmates recorded.
The fake report had claimed that over 50 armed men stormed the correctional facility, freeing 70 Fulani inmates
allegedly held for attacks on farmers. It further claimed the prison was left empty after the attack, a claim the
correctional service dismissed as baseless and misleading.

“All officers are on red alert, and there is no truth to the story,” Uboegbulam assured, urging the public to disregard the
social media rumor. He emphasized that the correctional centre remains secure under tight surveillance by armed forces.
The Owerri facility, still under high security since a 2021 jailbreak during the #EndSARS protest, is guarded by military
armored vehicles and other security agencies. Its access lane has remained restricted to traffic ever since, making the alleged breach unlikely.
Despite the viral claims, normal traffic and daily activities continued around the area on Thursday. Authorities warn
that spreading false security reports could incite panic and undermine public trust in national security operations.
