The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has extended the Anambra voter registration exercise by three full days.
This follows a strong turnout of prospective voters and widespread public appeals for more time to complete registrations.
Sam Olumekun, INEC’s Commissioner for Information and Voter Education, announced the decision in a statement issued on Thursday morning.
He revealed that, in just nine days, over 96,000 new voters had been registered across all Anambra registration centres.
According to Olumekun, INEC recorded an average of 10,600 registrations daily, reflecting growing public confidence in the process.
Anambra records massive turnout
INEC also confirmed that 12,595 individuals applied to transfer their registration information within or outside the state.
In addition, 7,061 voters requested updates or replacements for lost or damaged Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs).
Originally scheduled to end on July 17, the Anambra voter registration extension pushes the closing date to July 20.
The Commission praised the peaceful and orderly conduct observed at all 326 registration centres across Anambra State.
After registration ends, INEC will display the preliminary register to allow citizens submit claims or raise objections.
INEC will then carry out a thorough data cleanup using its Automated Biometric Identification System (ABIS) for accuracy.
Current registration figures show 58% of new voters are female and 52% are aged between 18 and 34.
INEC believes these statistics show strong youth and female participation in Nigeria’s democratic process at the grassroots level.
Meanwhile, the Commission has received five more applications from political associations seeking registration as political parties.
This brings the total number of political party applications submitted to INEC so far to one hundred and thirty-four.
Details about each applicant—names, acronyms, leadership, and contact addresses—are already published on INEC’s official website.
The Anambra voter registration extension remains part of INEC’s commitment to ensuring fair, inclusive, and accessible electoral participation.
More details on these associations, including names and leadership, are now available on INEC’s official website.
