The Federal Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development has approved the Kogi State Government’s bid to construct an international airport in Zariagi, according to a statement from the State Commissioner for Information and Communications, Kingsley Fanwo. The approval, dated October 9, 2024, marks a significant step forward in the administration’s vision to position Kogi State as an aviation hub.
Fanwo emphasized that the Governor Usman Ododo-led administration is committed to completing the project within schedule while ensuring full compliance with aviation regulatory standards. The Commissioner highlighted the airport’s potential to serve Kogi and at least ten neighbouring states, providing relief to the congested Lokoja-Abuja road and the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja.
Kogi State’s strategic location at the nation’s centre, Fanwo said, makes it an ideal choice for such an infrastructure project. By developing the international airport, the state aims to boost its economy, create jobs, and elevate its visibility on the global stage, attracting both passengers and cargo operations.
“The Ododo administration is committed to hiring top professionals to ensure the project meets industry standards,” Fanwo said. He extended gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Aviation Minister for granting the historic approval, describing it as a crucial milestone in Kogi’s development plans.
Fanwo reassured residents of Kogi State of the administration’s dedication to delivering impactful projects, building upon the progress of the last eight years. Located in a strategic area with an existing airstrip, Zariagi was praised by the Federal Ministry of Aviation team for its suitability, adding momentum to Kogi’s transformation as an aviation and economic hub.
