President of the United States of America, Donald Trump has informed his aides of his readiness to end the conflict in the Middle East even without reopening the Strait of Hormuz, the Guardian UK reports, quoting the Wall Street Journal.
Trump is said to have communicated to his aides that he is prepared to terminate the US military operations against Iran.
This is even if the Strait of Hormuz remains predominantly closed, according to an administration officials cited by the Wall Street Journal.
Such a decision would likely reinforce Tehran’s stronghold over the waterway and postpone the intricate task of reopening it for a future time, the report indicates.
It further states that “In recent days, Trump and his aides have evaluated that an operation to open the chokepoint would extend the conflict beyond his desired timeframe of four to six weeks.”
The report said that Trump has concluded that the U.S. should accomplish its primary objectives of undermining Iran’s navy and missile capabilities while de-escalating current hostilities, simultaneously exerting diplomatic pressure on Tehran to restore the unimpeded flow of trade.
The report added that should this approach prove unsuccessful, Washington would urge its allies in Europe and the Gulf to take the initiative in reopening the strait, the officials noted.
It said there are also military alternatives that the president could consider, but they are not his immediate focus.
